Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Ethical journalism plays a pivotal role in advancing social justice by amplifying marginalized voices, exposing injustices, and fostering public accountability. Through principles such as fairness, accuracy, and impartiality, ethical journalism ensures that societal issues are reported responsibly, empowering citizens to demand change (Oluwaseun & Bello, 2023). In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, issues such as inequality, discrimination, and lack of access to essential services highlight the need for media to serve as a catalyst for social justice. Journalists operating in the region face challenges such as political pressure, limited resources, and ethical dilemmas, which often compromise their ability to report effectively (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how ethical journalism contributes to promoting social justice in Zaria, exploring its impact on public awareness, advocacy, and policy change.

In Zaria, journalists often struggle to balance their professional responsibilities with external pressures, leading to inconsistent reporting on issues of social justice (Garba & Musa, 2023). The lack of adherence to ethical standards diminishes the media’s credibility and effectiveness in addressing societal challenges. This study seeks to address this problem by investigating the role of ethical journalism in promoting social justice and proposing strategies for fostering ethical practices in the region.
